Thomas Sankara was a revolutionary in every sense of the word. After taking power following a military coup at the age of 33, he quickly launched programs for social, ecological, and economic change, and renamed the country from the French colonial Upper Volta to Burkina Faso ("Land of Upright Man"). He focused on African self reliance and independence, and focused on ending poverty, women's rights, defense, building infrastructure, and improving the environment.
